The Brazilian currency has been the real since 1994, which is pronounced hay-AHL. The symbol of the Brazilian currency is either BRL or R$. One hundred centavos makes up one real - cents. There are two different sets of coins in circulation currently. A set of coins were introduced in denomination of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos, and R$1 (one real) in 1994. The second series of coins in 1998 consist of 1 and 5 centavos, 10, 25 and 50 centavos, and a R$1 coin from 2002. Both sets of coins are valid, however, the government has planned to eventually remove the first set of coins from circulation.

Banknotes were introduced in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 reais from 1994 to 2002. Brazil money in note form are all the same size, however the different colours help you to distinguish the difference between them.
